The MTA plans to modernize subway turnstiles to stop fare evaders starting this fall.

Happening in the World: Cardinal Angelo Becciu withdrew today from the upcoming conclave election of the new pope, citing his reason as being for “the good of the church.” Becciu was previously forced to resign from his position as head of the Vatican’s saint-making office by Pope Francis due to allegations of financial misconduct and was put on trial despite his denial of wrongdoing. He was convicted of finance-related charges and is currently appealing a five-and-a-half-year prison sentence. Becciu stated that he had the right to enter the Sistine Chapel alongside the other cardinals to participate in the election of the new pope but was given two letters signed by Francis before his death that directly addressed Becciu and asked him to not participate in the conclave. His withdrawal comes after his reception of the letters. (AP)

Happening in the US: A power outage of telecommunication and air-traffic equipment at an air traffic control facility in Philadelphia stopped all flights departing Newark Liberty International Airport and other small airports in the area. Arriving flights were slowed or cancelled, and over 35 United Airlines flights were diverted. The Federal Aviation Administration stated that the technical issues were repaired, but understaffing of the Philadelphia facility will continue to affect air travel. (WSJ)

Happening in NYC: In an attempt to stop fare evasion, the MTA will begin to replace subway turnstiles with a modern gate design starting in the fall. Four different glass sliding door designs will be tested at Atlantic Ave-Barclays Center, 14th Street-Union Square, and Forest Hills-71 Avenue stations, and 40 more will be installed by the end of 2026. Fare evasion reportedly costs the MTA over 700 million dollars a year, and the new glass sliding door design will prevent travelers jumping over or forcing open the gates. The MTA plans to install the new gates at over 150 stations within the next five years. (Gothamist)
