While Putin is supersizing his forces, Trump is downsizing ours.
Happening in the World: Although the US has been trying to broker a ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine war, Putin is increasing the size of Russia’s military. On Tuesday, he called 160,000 men aged 18 to 30 in the country’s largest draft since 2011. He aims to grow the military to 2.39 million men and the number of active servicemen to 1.5 million. (BBC)
Happening in the US: Yesterday, Donald Trump placed four of the 27 institute directors at the NIH on administrative leave, reassigning some to the Indian Health Service division. These four directors include the director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the National Institute of Nursing Research, the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. In charge of nine billion dollars in funding at the NIH, these directors were laid off on Jay Bhattacharya’s first day as the head of the NIH. (Nature)
Happening in NYC: A federal judge has ruled that Mahmoud Khalil’s deportation case will stay in New Jersey, despite efforts by the Trump administration to move it to Louisiana. Since Khalil was detained in New Jersey when his lawyers filed a Habeas Corpus petition, Judge Michael Farbiarz ruled that the case would remain in New Jersey. While this ruling means that Khalil’s attorneys will argue his case before a New Jersey judge, it does not guarantee his transfer from the Louisiana detention facility where he is currently being held.
