Thanks to new technology, more details about the sinking of the Titanic have come to light.

Happening in the World: A new 3D mapping technology has revealed new details about the sinking of the Titanic. The scan provides the first full view of the Titanic, as previously taken pictures were only underwater snapshots. The map shows a structural model of the ship, information about its speed, direction, and position, and details that confirm eyewitness accounts about the sinking. A model of the boiler room revealed an open valve and concave boilers, confirming that steam was flowing into the electricity-generating system that kept the ship’s lights on as it sank. A close-up detail showed a porthole smashed by an iceberg, verifying survivors’ reports of ice coming into some cabins. The 3D scan also allows researchers to reconstruct the sinking of the Titanic, revealing that the iceberg created punctures spread across six compartments along the ship’s length. (BBC)

Happening in the US: The original version of a National Park Service web page about the Underground Railroad was restored after it was edited to remove information about Harriet Tubman. Multiple quotes and a large picture of Tubman were removed and replaced with quotes about how the Underground Railroad bridges the gap between racial divides and photos of postage stamps that highlighted “Black/white cooperation.” The changes were made without approval from the National Park Service. Many other web pages on government websites have been edited or removed as the Trump administration works to get rid of references to diversity and inclusion. (NYT)

Happening in NYC: In an effort to reduce lithium-ion battery fires, the Department of Transportation has started a new program to allow New York City property owners and tenants to apply for e-bike battery charging and swapping cabinet installation on sidewalks in front of their buildings. Guidelines have been posted by the Department of Transportation to help applicants with the process, who must go through the revocable consent process to allow private groups to install on public property. Specific site requirements and size regulations include ground-floor commercial space and a minimum of five residential units. Over 200 fires were sparked by lithium-ion batteries last year.
