Happening in the US: President Trump fired General Timothy D. Haugh, the head of the National Security Agency and US Cyber Command. The former head had been instrumental in pushing back on Russia, working to counter Moscow interference in the 2016 election. Amid cybersecurity threats like the Salt Typhoon from China, the Trump administration has disbanded much of the government’s election-related cyberdefenses and early-warning systems. (NYT)

Happening in NYC: The New York State Education Department states that it will not abide by the Trump administration’s demands to cut diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives from schools in exchange for billions of federal funding. Unlike universities that require funding for scientific research, public schools are more insulated by state and local taxes. (NYT)
