Let’s just say that I’m not the most patient person.
We are now out of internship season and have reached the (somehow) worse internship rejection season. This is when you wait to see if you’re being ghosted or rejected from the dozens of applications you’ve sent out. It’s hellish and against about 100 human rights laws. So if you’re anything like me, you’re going a little crazy. Here’s a non-exhaustive list of things to do while you wait for any company or organization to want to employ you:
- Go for a walk. New York City is beautiful! Go get some fresh air and try to clear your head. Plus, if you walk past any buildings that are home to a company you applied to work for, you can always pop in and sob loudly at the secretary until they offer you an interview!
- Call your parents. It’s nice to remember that there are people who care about you and who are rooting for you! You can also beg them to ask their business-savvy friends to hire you. Based on the fact that this hasn’t yet worked for me, I have to assume it works better if you’re a nepo baby, but at this point, anything is worth a shot.
- Reread the rejection emails you have gotten so far. Print them out. Scrapbook time, baby.
- Curse the state of the economy. Shake your fist at the sky. Learn a lot about the stock market so that you can hate it even more.
- Reject the internships first. You can really flip the script here and reclaim some power. Imagine how confused the hiring managers would be.
- Remove yourself from capitalism. Make it a chic personal decision. You can start a punk band that only plays for raccoons in the park. You can run away into the woods and live off of berries and fish that you catch with your hands. You can hide away in a lighthouse and become a local legend. You can forget what emails even are.
Suffice it to say, I am handling uncertainty really well. With these suggestions, you can too! Good luck, Barnumbia students. May the odds be ever in your favor… but also… not too in your favor. Hey, a girl’s gotta eat.
