Happening in the World: On Saturday, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine will not adhere to a three-day cease-fire proposed by Russia. Zelensky felt the short truce would not aid negotiations for lasting peace. In March, Ukraine accepted a proposal for a 30-day cease-fire from the Trump administration. President Zelensky told reporters in Kyiv on Saturday that the Russian counteroffer of a three-day cease-fire was merely a “theatrical show” and that the offer was meant to “create a soft atmosphere of an exit from isolation” for Russian President Vladimir V. Putin and a way to calm security worries of foreign leaders attending a Victory Day parade in Moscow on May 9. Ukraine’s offer of a 30-day truce continues to remain on the table, and Zelensky said that Ukraine would be willing to begin that truce before the May 9 holiday if Russia will accept it. (NYT)

Happening in the US: Fairhope, Alabama, established in 1894 with the aim of creating a utopian community, is now in conflict over books with sexual content or LGBTQ+ themes. The community was founded by devotees of Henry George, an economist who saw private land ownership as the driver of economic inequality, and they established the colony in line with his proposal for land to be owned by the community and leased to residents, farmers, and businesses. The community opened one of the first public libraries in Alabama and now records more than 180,000 annual visits. Residents have recently packed meetings with the City Council and the library board to debate certain books. Some demand that the books should be moved to the adult section, and others argue that this amounts to censorship and discrimination. This fight resembles those playing out in countless libraries across the country as conservative parents and activists challenge these books. (NYT)
