Take that, the Netherlands.

Happening in the World: Today is the first day of the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo, Japan. It will run through the 21st, featuring a series of athletic events. This morning, the United States won three out of four events in the 4×400 mixed relay. This comes as a sort of revenge to the Netherlands, who triumphed over the team in last year’s Olympics. Happening in NYC: In Canarsie, Brooklyn, a coalition of residents, activists, and politicians have come together to push for the construction of a new community center. They hope it will keep young people busy and out of trouble, but so far, the city has only been willing to grant $500,000 dollars for a study on the feasibility of the project. The coalition welcomes the funding, but believes much more is needed to construct and develop programming for the center. (Gothamist)
