This week, the football team defeated Georgetown in their home-opener!

Highlights:

On Saturday, the Columbia football team defeated the Georgetown Hoyas, 19-10 to secure their fifth consecutive home-opening victory and reclaim the Lou Little Cup.

From the beginning, the Lions were solid defensively, with senior Justin Townsend (CC ‘26) earning a nine-yard sack in the opening quarter. Charlie Newton (CC ‘27) was a standout defensively, earning his first career interception which disrupted a Georgetown drive at the midfield.

With just 2:53 left in the first quarter, quarterback Chase Goodwin (CC ‘27) found wide receiver Titus Evans (CC ‘27) for 22 yards (adding to his game total of 52) before Braden Dougherty (CC ‘27) led a 39-yard strike. The Lions’ closed on the touchdown when Goodwin connected with sophomore Hutch Crow (CC ‘28) to give the Lions an early lead. In the second quarter, Goodwin and Crow showed out again with a 26-yard pick up ending in a touchdown to extend the Lions’ lead to 13-0.

Despite a field goal from Georgetown before the half, and a touchdown in the third quarter, bringing the score to 16-10, the Lions rallied with defense, led by Townsend to prevent the Hoyas from scoring for the remainder of the game. Defensive back Caleb Solomon (CC ‘28) successfully broke up a pass in the end zone. Carter McCray (CC ‘28) followed with a critical save to give the Lions the ball in the fourth quarter.

With just 3:22 to go, linebacker Jack Smiechowski recorded his first of two interceptions, setting up a 20-yard field goal for Hugo Merry (CC ‘27) to bring the score to 19-10, cementing the lead for the Lions.

With this win, the Lions are getting ready to take on Princeton this Friday, October 3 at 6pm ET.
