Calling all film bros…

Happening off-Campus: Hungarian author, László Krasznahorkai has won this year’s Nobel Prize in Literature. He has written five novels and won numerous other literary prizes, including the 2015 Man Booker International Prize, and the 2013 Best Translated Book Award in fiction for his first novel Satantango, a postmodern work about the end of the world. He will receive the prize at a ceremony in Stockholm in December. BBC

Happening near Campus: Yesterday, a New York appellate court temporarily blocked Nassau County from enforcing a law that bans transgender girls and women from participating in sports at county-run facilities. The ruling comes amid ongoing legal challenges from civil rights groups who argue the measure violates state human rights laws. While the decision marks a significant win for advocates, the broader legal battle over the ban continues. Gothamist

Happening on Campus: The Maison Française will screen Octobre à Paris as part of its Censored Film Series. The film depicts the brutal police repression of a peaceful demonstration by Algerians protesting France’s colonial war in 1961. A post-screening discussion will feature professors Madeleine Dobie and Nicole Beth Wallenbrock, along with doctoral student Jihad Azahrai. The event will take place tonight in Buell Hall from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Register here

Field Note: I fear the film bros were right about One Battle After Another…Chase Infiniti and Teyana Taylor were amazing, and Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance reminded me why he is so often excused from being insufferable in real life. Also, “American Girl” by Tom Petty playing during the credits was actually life changing. I highly recommend it!
