Happening off-campus: Yesterday President Donald Trump vowed to begin testing U.S. nuclear weapons “on an equal basis” with Russia and China, signaling a potential shift in decades of American nuclear policy amid rising tensions among the world’s major powers. Trump made the announcement shortly before a highly anticipated meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Busan, South Korea. The talks were aimed at restoring stability after nearly a year of trade and economic turmoil. It remains unclear whether Trump was referring to an actual nuclear weapons test or a test of a nuclear-capable weapons system. None of the three major nuclear powers, the United States, Russia, or China, has conducted a full-scale nuclear weapons test since the 1990s. China’s last known test occurred in 1996. CNN
