A Category 5 storm is predicted to hit Jamaica.

Happening off-campus: Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm, is set to make landfall today in Jamaica. This storm is expected to be the strongest to hit the island in 147, since storm recordkeeping first began. The Jamaican government has done all it could to prepare for the hurricane, but none of the country’s infrastructure can withstand a storm of this magnitude. Hurricane Melissa is expected to hit Cuba next. (AP)

Happening near-campus: A lawsuit over New York’s voting lines may allow the congressional map to be redrawn. A lawsuit filed by the Marc Elias Group claimed that current voting districts in Staten Island unfairly marginalizes Black and Latino voters and said that the 11th District should be redrawn to include parts of Lower Manhattan. Redrawing these lines would increase non-white voters, allowing for them to have more political influence in elections. District 11 is currently represented by Republican Nicole Malliotakis, while Lower Manhattan is represented by Democrat Dan Goldman, who stated that he would run again against Malliotakis if the congressional map were to be redrawn.
