Happening off-Campus: New York health authorities confirmed on Tuesday that a woman on Long Island has been infected with the mosquito-borne virus chikungunya and appeared to have caught the virus locally. This virus is more commonly seen in the Caribbean and Central and South America, and this is the first time a case of chikungunya has been identified in New York state. The virus is known for causing severe joint pain, which can linger for months or even years. Other symptoms include fever, rash, and muscle pain. (NYT)
