On Sunday, October 19, The Columbia Zeta Phi Beta organization supported participants at the Make Stride Breast Cancer Walk, an event held by the American Cancer Society in Central Park.

With the coming of autumn comes the rolling crescendo that is the transition to October, thus welcoming Breast Cancer Awareness Month: a time dedicated to celebrating survivors, and remembering the individuals lost to this fight. Every year, the American Cancer Society hosts Making Strides, an event where people in the New York City area can walk Central Park for breast cancer survivors and those they have lost. On October 19, hundreds of people walked in bright pink, dressed in Breast Cancer Awareness merchandise, and cheered on others to keep going.

At the beginning of the trail, vendors selling merchandise related to the events littered the park. For those who can’t complete the walk, there were several attractions, from live performances to public figures such as New York City Public Advocate Jumaane D. Williams, who met with the community.

Along with this, the Columbia Zeta Phi Beta organization gathered at the beginning of the walk, giving out goody bags, which were previously made at a prior meeting for survivors. Within the bag were kind notes, stickers, and much more as a small token of support and appreciation for these women. The Zetas celebrated all the survivors who gathered there; some who left in tears, and others with a smile on their face.

Be sure to support the American Cancer Society throughout the rest of October. Even a small whoop and holler in support of survivors can make a day brighter.
