A lower Manhattan sculpture garden may be leaving us soon.
Happening off-campus: The funeral for Israeli soldier Lt. Hadar Goldin was held this morning in Kfar Saba, Israel, whose remains were returned from Hamas captivity after 11 years. Two hours after a ceasefire took effect in 2014, Goldin was killed and his body taken hostage. Thousands of people attended his funeral, including Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, Israel’s military chief of staff, and chief of staff at the time of Goldin’s death and opposition lawmaker, Benny Gantz. The bodies of four hostages kidnapped on October 7 are still held by Hamas. (AP)
Happening near-campus: Newly elected mayor Zohran Mamdani plans to evict the lower Manhattan Elizabeth Street Garden’s private operators in order to build affordable housing. Mayor Eric Adams spent years trying to do the same but changed his mind last June, allowing the garden to stay. The development is planned to add 123 housing units, many of which will be reserved for formerly homeless seniors. An eviction order signed in March legally backs Mamdani’s plan. (Gothamist)
Happening on-campus: The Alice! Health Promotion is hosting an online workshop later today on stimulant use and misuse in the Columbia student body. The session is open to all Columbia University students. It will take place from 12 to 1 pm. Register here.
