Universal Rights in Practice: International Frameworks and Domestic Legal Systems
- Tuesday, November 18, 5 to 7:30 pm, Italian Academy Teatro.
- Also featuring Giuliano Amato is this symposium, which seeks to examine issues in human rights as part of the Italian Academy’s “Rule of Law” initiative. Special attention will be paid to how international and national judiciaries interact and how principles of human rights benefit communities. Other speakers include John Bessler, Professor of Law at University of Baltimore School of Law, Marian Da Silva, TrialWatch Legal Fellow at the Columbia Law School Human Rights Institute, and Olatunde Johnson, Professor of Law at Columbia Law School.

Panel Discussion – Transatlantic Bondage: Slavery and Freedom

- Editor and contributor to the book Transatlantic Bondage: Slavery and Freedom in Spain, Santo Domingo, and Puerto Rico Dr. Lissette Acosta-Corniel will discuss the history and culture of enslaved peoples in the early Americas. This event is sponsored by LAIC’s Graduate Student Association, the Department of History, the Institute of Latin American Studies, and the Greater Caribbean Studies Program.
