(Allegedly) taking another trip to Flavortown.
One thing about me is that I love capsaicin and condiments. Last semester, I 2Girls1Snacked the sauce bar at JJ’s Place, but a lot of the sauces there were severely lacking in spice. Let’s hope Hewitt Dining’s new Tabasco bar redeems that… (spoiler: it kinda did!)
Once again, quick disclaimer: I used fries as a neutral accompaniment. Here are my thoughts on all six sauces! Yes, despite the fact that there are eight dispensers, there are only six sauce options. Not sure how I feel about this.
All opinions are my own, and you should feel empowered to disagree.
Jalapeño: This is really good!! It’s sharp and tangy without being vinegary like some hot sauces tend to be. Bonus points for being green! A classic.
Buffalo Style: This tastes alcoholic. I don’t know if that’s from the vinegar, but it tastes slightly fermented. You may enjoy it if you’re into that. Not very buffalo-esque.
Chipotle: Peppery with a nice kick! I wish I had something other than fries to eat this with. It tastes like spicy, peppery barbecue sauce kinda? Also looks like it. I don’t know if I’m getting chipotle, though.
Cayenne Garlic: The garlic flavour is super mild, but this one grew on me really quick. Pretty basic, and good with fries.
Sriracha: This is my favourite sauce, and my go-to every time I’m at Hewitt. It pairs well with everything, from grilled chicken to fries. It doesn’t taste like authentic sriracha sauce from that bottle with a rooster on it (chicken?) but nevertheless, it’s actually spicy (the spice lingers for a bit) and gets the job done.
Sweet and Spicy: I swear this tastes like a sauce I’ve eaten at JJ’s. Like, the exact same. I can’t for the life of me remember which one, unfortunately. The sweetness is mild and I don’t know if I love it. This sauce doesn’t really work, in my opinion. I’m just used to a better sweet and spicy sauce from an Indian brand I love.
And my rankings:
- Sriracha
- Jalapeño
- Cayenne Garlic
- Chipotle
- Sweet and Spicy
- Buffalo Style (sorry, Buffalo natives, but this wasn’t even remotely Buffalo)
Overall, these packed a punch without being too spicy (except for the Sriracha). You shouldn’t expect thick sauces like at JJ’s, as these are definitely more runny (as Tabasco generally is). Let me know if you agree/disagree/wish Hewitt served more fried food!
