What’s the one thing gloomier than the weather outside? The US labor market.
Happening off-Campus: The US labor market lost 92,000 jobs in February, ticking the unemployment rate up to 4.4%, according to a recent report from the Department of Labor. The hardest-hit industries were restaurants and bars, administrative and support services, courier and messenger services, and even one of the market’s strongest points, healthcare, which lost 28,000 jobs after a four-week strike at Kaiser Permanente. Economists attribute the losses to employer uncertainty amid the war in Iran and rapid technological change (AP).
Happening near Campus: As the pressure to address New York City’s homelessness crisis mounts, the Mamdani Administration has announced that it will close a men’s shelter on East 30th Street this spring to allow for redevelopment. The Bellevue Shelter, notorious for violence, doubles as the point of entry for single men and adult families seeking emergency shelter. Until more permanent placements are found, its 250 residents will be relocated to facilities across lower Manhattan and Brooklyn (Gothamist).
Happening on Campus: Today, the Lenfest Center of the Arts will continue its “MoMentum: Mobilization & East Asian Documentary in Trans-Pacific Context” series with an all-day conference centered on how documentary making was historically aligned with movements for independence, agitation for change, citizen revolt, labor reform, and immigrant structure.
