Powerful storms in the Midwest are headed towards the East Coast.
Happening off-campus: Powerful storms swept through parts of Illinois and Indiana on Tuesday, spawning tornadoes that caused major damages to homes and power lines. Several people were injured in northwestern Indiana’s Lake Village, where multiple homes were leveled. The severe weather system, bringing heavy rain, hail, damaging winds, and possible tornadoes, could continue moving east into the mid-Atlantic and East Coast. States like Oklahoma and Michigan remain under tornado watches. (AP)
Happening near campus: Yesterday in the New York City Council, Councilmember Sandra Nurse introduced a bill that would increase minimum wage in New York City to 30 dollars an hour, nearly double the current rate. The legislation calls for employers with more than 500 employees to pay workers 20 dollars an hour by 2027 and 30 dollars an hour by 2030. This proposal echoes key components of Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral campaign. (Gothamist)
Happening on campus: The Center for Science and Society is hosting Jessica Ratcliff, Associate Professor of Science and Technology Studies at Cornell University, tonight from 6 to 7:30 pm in Fayerweather Hall 513. This event is a part of the broader New York History of Science Lecture Series, which is sponsored by multiple universities around New York. Ratcliff’s talk, titled, “Monopolizing Language”, will discuss the nineteenth-century establishment of a library-museum for Asian arts, sciences, and natural history at the corporate headquarters of the East India Company in London. Ratcliff will explore how the East India Company’s monopoly structure shaped the development of scientific research and institutions. She will also discuss how these efforts became integrated into Britain’s broader scientific culture. This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
