Byrne:Kozar:Duo

  • Tuesday, March 10, 6 pm, St. Paul’s Chapel
  • The Byrne:Kozar:Duo, composed of soprano Corrine Byrne and trumpeter Andy Kozar, visits Columbia to premier pieces by Alex Burtzos and Seare Ahmad Farhat, as well as present pieces composed for them by the likes of Reiko Füting, Jeffrey Gavett, and Marti Epstein. This event is part of the Sacred Music Series at St. Paul’s Chapel, which is a series of free concerts held at the chapel.

Pitching and Publishing Panel: What Do Editors Want?

  • Tuesday, March 10, 7-8:30 pm, Dodge Hall 401
  • For all those scrappy authors hungering for an inch into the published life, come to witness “demystify” an industry notoriously difficult to emerge in. In a conversation moderated by Adjunct Assistant Professor James Yeh ‘09, Tynan Kogane of New Directions, J. W. McCormack ’15 of The Baffler, and Camille Bromley of The New York Times come to discuss topics such as “how to get your foot in the door, how to pitch editors, general best practices for freelancers,” and the mysterious “peg.” Questions will also be entertained.

Film Screening & Discussion “In Spring.”

  • Wednesday, March 11, 6:30-9 pm, Harriman Institute Atrium (International Affairs Building, 12th floor)
  • Hosted by Columbia’s Ukraine Film Club, this screening of director Mikhail Kaufman’s “In Spring” (1929) offers audiences the opportunity to witness an “outstanding example of the Ukrainian silent cinema avant-garde,” which provides a rare glimpse into Ukraine’s transition “from revolutionary enthusiasm to Stalinist totalitarianism.”

Roman Perucki, organ

  • Thursday, March 12, 6 pm, St. Paul’s Chapel
  • Sacred Music returns for the second time this week for a showcase from decorated organist Roman Perucki, whose credentials include “chief organist in the cathedral in Gdańsk Oliwa…managing director of the Baltic Philharmonic Orchestra…[and] President of Society “Musica Sacra” and Society of Friends of the Cathedral in Gdańsk Oliwa.”

Legacy of New York — Brooklyn Book Crawl

  • Friday, March 13, 12:30-4 pm, meet at Kent Hall 201
  • Explore the rich crannies of Brooklyn’s literary life in a book crawl whose sites include The Ripped Bodice, Community Bookstore, and Unnameable Books. Carving out space for diverse culture, these book stores remain vibrant parts of community life and testify to the importance of a good story.
