City Council has announced plans to expand its ‘Fair Fares’ program to offer free bus and subway rides for low-income New Yorkers.
Happening off campus: The Trump Administration is asking Congress for a $1.7 trillion (40%) increase in defense spending for 2027. As the war in Iran escalates, Trump argues that military spending must be a national priority, allowing the Pentagon to restock munitions and other supplies amid a shortage. Both Democrats and Republicans, however, are skeptical, arguing that the White House has failed to keep them updated on the status of the war and that the spending increase could further exacerbate the national debt (NYT).
Happening near campus: New York City Council is looking to expand its ‘Fair Fares’ program. ‘Fair Fares’ allows residents making less than 150% of the federal poverty level to board New York City transit for half off. With a larger budget, the City Council argues that it could cover the full cost of rides, allowing more than one million eligible New Yorkers to ride the bus and subway for free (Gothamist).
Happening on-campus: Until April 9, you can donate your clean cotton fabric scraps to Paws & Pause, a campus initiative to make DIY dog toys for local NYC shelters. Donations should be brought to Kent 202. See details here.
