Happening Off Campus: The winners of the Nikon Small World in Motion competition this year displayed the tiny, beautiful world around us. The competition began in 1975, at first only accepting photography, and has since decided to include moving images as well. Awarded first place, Ning Xu is an optical engineer at the National University of Singapore. His video shows the cilia of a child with primary ciliary dyskinesia; the disorder causes the cilia in the lungs to become uncoordinated and unable to do their job. Dr. Xu is hoping to advance understanding of the disease, which is estimated to affect about 7,500 people worldwide. (New York Times)

Happening Near Campus: Four years after purchasing a decommissioned Staten Island Ferry, Pete Davidson and Colin Jost have made their East River debut. On Thursday night, after 300 people had made their way onto the renamed Snapple Island Ferry, Davidson and Jost performed a seven minute opening set, before a lineup of growing New York stars, including Ronny Ching and Jay Jurden. Both Jost and Davidson are from Staten Island, and speak of them fondly in their respective projects, Jost’s memoir “A Very Punchable Face” and Davidson’s show “The King of Staten Island.” As of Thursday, the ferry, which was commissioned in 1965, remains largely unchanged, with its signature orange and blue paint, glossed brown benches, and industrial scent. During the event Jost joked about its lack of air-conditioning, “Hot and Nauseous — that would be a good name for the next one of these.”(New York Times) 

Happening On Campus: This Monday, Columbia will be hosting Beyond the Cost of Exclusion: LGBTQIA+ Rights, Economic Inclusion, a discussion about the economic, educational, financial, and social barriers that LGBTQIA+ individuals face in Brazil.
