Echoes of Silence: How Student Migrants Navigate Political Taboos Across Borders

- Weirong Guo examines how Chinese students navigate political taboos across China and the United States, drawing on research at two American universities and one Chinese university. In the US “landmine zone,” where taboos are decentralized and socially enforced, students adapt by appearing apathetic, minimizing nationalism to avoid conflict, or restricting activism to trusted groups. The study shows that migration does not necessarily produce political engagement and highlights how peer, institutional, and transnational pressures shape continued avoidance.
