Happening in NYC: The mosaic coffee table of an Upper East Side family was found on Friday to be an ancient artifact from the Roman emperor Caligula. In the 1960s, the family had bought the mosaic from an aristocratic Italian family as an antique that was found on the shores of Lake Remi. Italian officials believe that the mosaic, composed of porphry cobbles arranged in colorful geometric patterns, likely comprised part of flooring of Caligula’s two “pleasure ships” during his reign, 37-41 A.D.
