Happening in the World: Maj Gen Alenka Ermenc was appointed to head of the armed forces in Slovenia. Maj Ermenec has served in the army since 1991, holding roles such as army commander and deputy chief of staff. Slovenia is the first Nato state to have a woman serve as head of the army (BBC).
Happening in the US: Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith won Mississippi’s U.S. Senate runoff election, defeating Democrat Mike Epsy. Hyde-Smith made news for her inappropriate comment on “public hangings”, which served as a painful reminder of Mississippi’s history of lynchings. Trump visited Mississippi earlier this week to express his support for Hyde-Smith (CNN).
Happening in NYC: New York City shoppers this holiday season should be on the lookout for thieves. A woman had her $1,100 Canada Goose jacket stolen in SoHo moments after her purchase. Her friend managed to hold on tight to his luxury coat, winning the tug-of-war with the crook. Several other shoppers were targeted in Times Square, some at knifepoint (New York Post).
