Barnard’s housing selection is almost half-done, but that doesn’t mean that the show is over. 6-person selection starts tomorrow–and YOU could be the lucky duckling to pick into the middle child of the 600s.

Location: 616 West 116th Street

Nearby Dorms: 600, 620, the Quad, Hewitt, Schapiro, Woodbridge

Stores And Restaurants: Morton Williams, Shake Shack, Pret, Sweetgreen

Cost: $5,413 per semester (standardized for Barnard except for studio singles)

Amenities:

• Bathrooms: There is one private bathroom for each suite.
• AC/Heating: Does not have AC, unfortunately, but does have heating.
• Kitchen: There is one kitchen per suite that includes a refrigerator and an oven with a gas stovetop.
• Lounges: There’s a TV lounge located on the first floor with a computer lab and a piano! It’s also a great place to cry.
• Laundry: The laundry room is located in the basement.
• Gym: No gym in the building, but Barnard Hall is close to the building! Dodge is only slightly farther.
• Intra-transportation: Two elevators are your key to travel!
• Hardwood/Carpet: It’s going to be linoleum for ya. :/
• Wifi: You can use Barnard Secure or Barnard Guest.

Room Variety: 

• 616 has 5-person and 6-person suites with doubles and singles. 5-person suites have 3 singles, 1 double and 6-person suites have 2 singles, 2 doubles.

Numbers:

•  616 houses 205 upperclassmen. This year, 5-person had the cutoff of 220/25, this means that the last group that got to pick was a mixed rising-senior and rising-junior group. However, looking forward to the 6-person, the cutoff LAST YEAR was 150/62, so a mixed rising-sophomore and rising-junior group. It looks like rising-juniors will have the best chance picking into 616 for the 6-person–with the layout available being 2 singles, 2 doubles.

Bwog Recommendations: 

• Though you’re more likely to be in a double than not, 616 is a great option for its proximity to campus and you get a fairly spacious room (albeit probably a double)! You’re in the middle of the 600s so it’s more likely than not that you’re going to know someone in the row, so you will be close to friends. Additionally, unlike the rest of the 600s, you have a printer and computer lab in your building–yay! So no worry, you do not need to put on real people clothes to go print. If you prioritize A/C, 616 is unfortunately not the place for you to be. However, many residents have said that after the first week or two it isn’t a problem.

• “The shaft honestly isn’t TOO bad, you get big windows and a big room–so it’s not as bad as being shafted in somewhere like Plimpton.”
• “The doubles are super spacious and are the perfect amount of room to host a watch party of the season finale of Are You The One?”
• “I love being so close to campus, however the trade-off with the A/C was a bit hard at first but at some point, you accept you will always be sweating and you go from there.”
• “Kitchen is on the smaller end, which is a bit unfortunate.”
