Happening in the World: Norway’s capital Oslo has unveiled a statue of Freya, a beloved walrus who was put down because of public safety concerns. Norway’s fisheries ministry explained that they had to put down Freya because beachgoers and boaters were not respecting her space. Freya would frequently sit on the hull of boats or lounge on the shore, and though the fishery ministry released public warnings, civilians did not give her enough personal space to ensure their safety from Freya. Their decision has been harshly criticized. “I started [the statue campaign] because I’m furious about the way the [Norwegian] Fisheries Directorate and the state handled this situation,” campaign organizer Erik Holm told the AFP news agency. The statue is named “For Our Sins.” (BBC

Happening in NYC: Employees at the Union Square Barnes & Noble are petitioning for unionization after the Barnes & Noble Education store at Rutgers Campus made a similar call earlier this month. They filed for union election with the National Labor Relations Board on Friday, hoping to be represented by the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union. The employees are unionizing for better benefits and training, citing delayed promotions, poorly managed customer conflict, and overburdened and under-compensated workloads as some of the reasons for unionizing.
