A look at history being made and plans for future progress.
Happening in the World: Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko has beaten the previous record of total time in space. He has logged over 874 days in space, and he is expected to reach over 1,110 days by the end of September. Kononenko has made five trips to the ISS, with his current expedition having launched on September 15, 2023. (AP)
Happening in the US: On Thursday, February 1, the Providence City Council approved the building of the state’s first supervised injection sites—a facility where individuals would be allowed to use illicit drugs while under professional watch. Only two of these sites operate openly in the country, and they are both located within NYC. This approval stands in stark contrast to the failed efforts or outright bans of such sites in Colorado, Massachusetts, California, Vermont, and Pennsylvania. (NYT)
Happening in NYC: The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey have unveiled an updated $10 billion design for the Port Authority Bus Terminal at 41st Street and 8th Avenue. Construction, which would take part in two phases, is expected to take eight years—a completion year of 2032. The public, according to Rick Cotton, executive director of Port Authority, will have 45 days to comment on the plan, and there will be four public hearings about it. (NYT)
Happening in Our Community: A variety of officials from Food and Agriculture Organization United Nations and Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition and professors from Columbia Climate School and Cornell CAS are introducing the Food Systems Countdown, an initiative that aims to use data to monitor and assess food systems. This policy debrief will be held on Zoom on Monday, February 5 from 8:30 to 9:45 am, and it can be registered for here.
