A convicted felon, twice impeached, returns to the Oval Office… Editor’s warning: mentions of violence and death.
Happening in the World: Rescuers pull 30 bodies out of the rubble after a late-night Israeli strike on an apartment in central Lebanon. It’s unclear if there were any survivors still trapped under the rubble. There was no warning from the Israeli military. The strike’s intended target was also unknown. Barja, just north of the port city of Sidon, has not been regularly targeted so far. (AP)
Happening in the US: Trump clinches an Oval Office return after winning key battleground states, achieving one of the greatest political comebacks of all time—a convicted felon who was twice impeached and left the presidency in disgrace just four years ago, returning decisively with promises of massive migrant deportation, veiled threats of retribution against his political enemies, and more. He reached the 270 electoral vote mark after Pennsylvania and Wisconsin were called in his favor in the early hours of Wednesday; he had also won more than 50% of the popular vote. (USN)
Happening in NYC: New York voters pass Prop 1, enshrining abortion rights in the city’s constitution. Abortion is already legal in New York; the amendment makes it more challenging to restrict it in the future by expanding the groups covered by the Equal Protection Clause of the state constitution to include “ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, and sex—including sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, pregnancy outcomes, reproductive health care, and autonomy.” (Gothamist)
