Happening in the World: A last-minute agreement between Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican Prime Minister Claudia Sheinbaum and President Trump has put a 30-day pause on Trump’s proposed 25% tariffs which would have gone into effect today at 12 am. The agreement, made over the phone yesterday, involves the boosting of border security at the US-Canada and US-Mexico borders and a crack down on drug trafficking. 10% tariffs on China will still go ahead, and additional tariffs on the EU are still under consideration. Happening in NYC: In a letter released yesterday, New York Attorney General Letitia James told health care providers that refusing gender-affirming care to patients could constitute a violation of state anti-discrimination laws. Last week, in response to an executive order threatening to withhold federal funding from organizations that offer gender-affirming care, NYU Lagone Health began cancelling gender-affirming care appointments for children under 19. James’ letter specifies that the withdrawal of federal funding is not a legal justification for refusing to provide trans people with services which are offered to other patients. (Gothamist)
