The tourists were visiting Baisaran, a mountain-top meadow about 3 miles away from Pahalgam. Kashmir remains a source of tension between India and Pakistan due to insurgency in the region since 1989. Happening in the US: The new chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine, made a surprise visit to the southwestern border of the US to observe how the active-duty troops are aiding law-enforcement agencies and building barriers. President Donald Trump plans to turn a narrow strip of land along the Mexican border in California, Arizona, and New Mexico into a military base to stop illegal crossings, which is being called the Roosevelt Reservation. The Pentagon has sent over 7,000 troops to the area. Any military forces in the area are allowed to temporarily detain any migrants passing through the region for trespassing on a military reservation. Trump invoking the Insurrection Act—which allows the use of armed forces to enforce laws—has not been ruled out, with recommendations from the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security to come in the following days. Happening in NYC: US Supreme Court Judge Mary V. Rosado has issued a temporary restraining order against Mayor Eric Adams’ administration to prevent ICE’s presence on Rikers Island. This comes at the request of the City Council, which is suing Adams over the administrative order that would allow ICE to open an office on Rikers. The hearing will take place on Friday, and the restraining order may be extended, modified, or removed. (Gothamist)
