Today is Columbia’s homecoming!
Happening off-Campus: The waters off the Pacific coast have had their warmest summer on record. From July to September, the temperature was on average 0.25 degrees Celsius warmer than the previous high in 2022. There is no specific answer for the warming, but one hypothesis is that the dirty engine oil produces large amounts of sulfur dioxide. There is also a worry that extreme heat in the North Pacific will affect the UK and Europe. (BBC)
Happening near Campus: A thick layer of pea-colored scum has covered the Hudson River due to warmer waters. It covers Beacon to Germantown. It is the worst outbreak of cyanobacteria for the past 40 years and is very unusual for lakes in general. The largest patch of algae is centered around Kingston, which is near primary drinking sources. Physical ingestion of cyanobacteria is very harmful. (Gothamist)
Happening on Campus: Columbia homecoming is today, October 18th! It is a fun-filled day held at the Baker Athletics Complex. There will be a tailgate-style lunch and games for kids and adults. More information can be found here.
