Stubacher is one of 94 Austrian glaciers that have retreated over the last two years.
Happening off-Campus: 98% of Austria’s glaciers have retreated over the last two years, “making the consequences of climate change visible,” says a new report from the Austrian Alpine Club. The greatest losses, exceeding 300 feet, have been in the Albeiner Ferner to the west and the Stubacher to the east. As exceptionally poor weather conditions accelerate glacier retreat, affecting drinking water, agriculture, infrastructure, and more, the club calls on European policymakers to expand climate action (AP).
Happening near Campus: The New York City Department of Education has unveiled plans to create an AI-focused selective high school. Next Generation Technology High School would train students in cybersecurity, computer science, robotics, and advanced math, while nurturing them to be both “builders [and] ethical users of AI.” The announcement is not without backlash from some parents, echoing national concerns about plagiarism, data security, and students’ social-emotional development with AI. There will be a hearing on the new school on April 14 (Gothamist).
Happening on Campus: Today from 3 to 4 pm, Dr. Katy Huff from the University of Illinois – Urbana/Champaign will host a hybrid seminar on the future of nuclear energy policy and deployment both in the U.S. and globally. See details here.
