The heirs to the Bic fortune are claiming their chauffeur stole a Renaissance masterpiece from their father’s Fifth Avenue apartment.
Happening off Campus: Last night, the Senate voted to fund the Department of Homeland Security, potentially bringing to a close the longest partial government shutdown yet. Reflecting ongoing debate between Republicans and Democrats, the bill does not include funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement or Border Patrol, nor does it include restrictions like barring immigration officers from wearing masks and requiring that they obtain judicial warrants to enter private homes. Next, the bill goes to the House, where Speaker Mike Johnson (R) could open a vote on it as soon as today (NYT).
Happening near Campus: The three sons of Baron Marcel Bich, founder of ballpoint pen company Bic, are claiming that their chauffeur stole a Renaissance masterpiece from their father’s Fifth Avenue apartment 20 years ago. Now, in an attempt to repossess the Fra Angelico, they’re suing its new owners as well as the estate of late dealer Richard Feigen, who they say should’ve known something was up when “a company chauffeur with no art-collecting background, no documented means, and no plausible explanation for possessing a multimillion-dollar masterpiece” offered him the painting. Representatives of Feigen claim no wrongdoing (Gothamist).
Happening on-Campus: Today from 12 to 2 pm on Low Plaza, Spectator and the Columbia College Student Council are bringing back Free Food Expo, featuring free food and drinks from local favorites like MAKI, Oren’s Coffee, and Junzi. See details here.
