Happening Off-Campus: Yesterday, Iran, the United States, and Israel agreed to a last-minute two-week ceasefire, prompting U.S. President Donald Trump to step back from earlier threats of a sweeping bombing campaign against Iran. However, the deal appeared fragile, as new attacks in Iran and Gulf Arab states are being reported today. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said it supports the temporary pause in U.S. strikes on Iran, while emphasizing that ongoing war with Hezbollah in Lebanon is not covered by the arrangement. Happening Near Campus: Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Tuesday that a new unit at Bellevue Hospital will open to accommodate Rikers Island detainees with serious medical conditions. The $241 million facility is intended to enhance care for people in custody while also moving the city closer to its goal of shutting down the jail complex. Although the 104-bed unit was completed last year, city officials said its first patients are set to arrive on Wednesday. The opening comes amid growing scrutiny over a rising number of deaths in the jail system. (Gothamist)
