Yesterday, lawmakers came to rally on behalf of Jimmy’s Corner, a famed New York City dive facing eviction.
Happening Off Campus: At 5:07 GMT local time on Friday April 10th, the Orion spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California. This marks the first crewed mission to travel around the Moon in more than 50 years. On board were astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. Before splashing down, the capsule endured a 13-minute descent, before re-entering the atmosphere at extreme speed, with temperatures on its exterior reaching about 2,760 degrees Celsius. Before re-entry, Wiseman radioed mission control: “We got a great view of the Moon out window 2 – looks a little smaller than yesterday.” Houston replied, “Guess we’ll have to go back.” (Al Jazeera)
Happening Near Campus: Yesterday, lawmakers rallied to stop the eviction of Jimmy’s Corner, the last remaining dive bar near Times Square. The bar’s founder, Jimmy Glen, died of COVID – 19 in 2020, and his son, Adam Glenn, took over after his death. In the wake of the founders death, the landlord, the Durst Organization, argues that it could terminate the bar’s lease upon the elder Glenn’s death. During the rally, State Sen. Julia Salazar and Assemblymember Emily Gallagher said that the pending eviction is a reason to pass their proposed Small Business Rent Stabilization Act, which would limit rent hikes and guarantee lease renewals for businesses that don’t owe back rent. According to Glenn, if he gets evicted, he will find a new location. (Gothamist)
