Curious about how Knicks fans are feeling going into the new season?
Happening Off-Campus: On June 17th, Kris Anderson found a picture of a mantis unlike anything he had ever seen. It had all of the classic signs of a dead-leaf mantis, except that it was one of the most realistic leaf camouflages that he had found. He was amazed, then disappointed when he realized that the image was AI generated. Websites such as INaturalist, eBird, and SafeCast, allow the public to be a participant in scientific research and monitoring by uploading photos from everyday life. Though, because of AI, these websites are being flooded with fake images. To combat this problem, websites like these are creating safeguards, such as limiting submissions and new warning systems, to mitigate the appearance of AI. (New York Times)
Happening Near Campus: New Yorkers are getting used to a new feeling, being the reigning champions. As the new basketball season is beginning, Knicks fans are still riding the high of the win while being cautiously optimistic. Bronx resident, Brian Brennan, said, “This was the year where everything changed for me as a Knicks fan.” The last time the Knicks won the championship was 1973, over fifty years ago. Now people are hopeful, shaking the feeling of disappointment and rooting for our champions. (Gothamist)
