Petition to put the SNu guys on the d-line

This past Saturday, the CU Lions football team suffered an albeit humiliating 38-18 loss to Dartmouth’s Big Green. It doesn’t take much football knowledge to know that our beloved lions were getting clobbered by a group of kids from a school whose unofficial mascot is a beer keg, because the silence of Columbia’s student (and parent, I guess) section was quieter than a Butler reading room. Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that the most invigorated the crowd got was during the T-shirt toss. Which, also, the throwers need to go and hit the gym so someone other than the first three rows can get a free shirt.

A short intermission for my favorite YikYak post of the day:

While the game itself was a disappointment, I’m not really sure what to describe the pregame environment as. 113th was duly crowded, and the line from SNus doorway went to the end of the block. Though, I was actually pretty impressed by how many people fit into the frat backyards, and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, which was a merry sight to see in the middle of midterms, where everyone walks around campus with a little less light in their eyes each day. Note for next year, get the tickets early. But, it made for a good insta story!

Anyways, my petition for Coach Poppe is as follows: recruit whomever was guarding the doors at SNu. They had that place locked down. Their stubborn refusal to let anyone who didn’t have a wristband through is much needed for the football team, who could use a reminder that maybe the guys in green shouldn’t be welcomed past the first down line.

Another theme for the day was feeling incredibly close with the strangers I was in crowded areas with. First, on 113th, then inside a brownstone, then on the subway, and lastly in my very uncomfortable stadium seat. Judging by the lines for the shuttles, I could probably bet that those were cramped too. In medieval times, I’d have to marry the guy I was next to on the subway because of how close we were.

Regardless, it was nice to see everyone with their parents, even though there were multiple occasions where an out-of-state parent stopped in the middle of the sidewalk and I had to spin dodge them at the last second. Maybe I should be a running back…put me in coach!

One particularly apt sign I saw read “the dance team always wins.” I agree with this fully. If there’s anything consistent about the two Columbia football games I’ve been to, other than us losing, it’s the beautiful and amazing vibes cultivated by the cheer and dance teams. Join me in a round of applause for Columbia dance and cheer!!

If I had to leave one piece of parting advice, it’s to just go to the football game anyways. Even if you don’t like football, just go. It’s fun! People are there, tickets are free so you can leave whenever, and the soft pretzels are really good. Just have fun, and remember that some people go to schools where they actually expect good football and they don’t even get that. Go Lions!
