If you’re still crying after discovering your lottery number yesterday, this may not help: Housing just recently posted the master lists of lottery numbers by UNI and priority number. Accordingly, through the magic of science, Bwog has again whipped up a little calculator to help you quantify exactly how screwed you are, which we can represent mathematically by calculating the number of groups of the same size ahead of you. Just punch in your information, and prepare to cringe.

@Anonymous So, the worst newspaper on earth finally admitting that it likes to torture Columbia students!! I knew this all along. It was I who originally broke the story that the spec lied about Ahmadinejad. spécsucks.wórdpress.com Bring happiness to the world with the demise of the newspaper/
@Anonymous Orange
@Anonymous Whoever the hell programs for BWOG is a freaking genius, mad props to you whoever you are!
@hi 7 person rising sophomore group with only 8 groups before ours… can we get a claremont 7 person suite?
@Anonymous Nevermind, just read Bwog’s summary. We won’t be dropping down.
@Anonymous Quick question from a group of 6 sophomores. Does sophomore pair-up mean that we choose during suite selection (i.e. before general selection)?
@Anonymous what’s the chance of a group of 3 sophomores with 12 groups before them getting a suite?
@Anonymous Considering there are only 6 three-person suites, exactly zero
@Anonymous How many all single five person suites are taken up by special interest groups?
@Anonymous how likely is furnald single with lottery no. within ~50 for a sophomore?
@Anonymous sorry i meant “rising” sophomore
@Anonymous Sophomore with lottery number ~2300. What’s the chance of a single? When should we drop into general selection (went in as a group of 5)?
@Anonymous none. you will be in a double.
@Just wondering does group size matter for suite selection? Do groups of 6, for example, pick before groups of 4? Or is that just how this calculator happen to state things.
@Anonymous group size does not matter. it goes by points, then lottery number, as it is on the pdf
@Anonymous Anyone know how there could be a five person group with a point value of 26.6667?
@Anonymous Two Barnard students, whose numbers don’t count?
@Anonymous Sooo, 30pt value, 6 person, 41 groups ahead of us. EC all singles out of our league?
@Kevin? Unfortunately, yes.
@Anonymous We’re doomed.
@Anonymous Nothing. Pair off into doubles.
@Anonymous meant for the 6-person sophomore suite
@Climax @ that 30: 7 6-person group
MOST BEAUTIFUL THING ONE COULD EVER HAVE
@Anonymous Wouldn’t it be possible to develop a program that, if enough people from housing groups inputted their top 5-6 choices, could output which of your top choices you’d get (if any) or project which choices would still be available by the time you pick?
@lolol look at all the 8 person freshies who thought they were gonna get ruggles
@Anonymous So cute…yet so clueless…kids…
@Erm They’re probably just planning to break into pairs in McBain in Suite Selection…
@Anonymous Will this update if groups decide to drop to general selection?
@Anonymous About how many 6-person suites are there on campus? If we’re the 60th 6-person group to pick (as sophomores), what would that approximately leave open?
@Sorry You will not get a six person suite. No all-sophomore groups will get suites this year. Your best option (by far) is sophomore pair-up into McBain or Schapiro or something.
@Anon3 in general, how many would drop to general selection? I’m in the general selection, and there are about 500 students ahead of me. Do I still stand a chance at getting a single? Thanks!
@Anonymous What year/priority number?
@Anonymous Just kidding, it doesn’t matter what year you are. Your chances of getting a single are quite slim. You might have to get a double, so starting thinking about who of your friends in general selection you wouldn’t mind trying to get a “blind” double with.
@similar situation I don’t think that’s true… Looking at past cut-off history and the number of singles available, you could probably end up with a crappy single in McBain or Wien. However, at that point you may want a double in a better place rather than 70 sqft to yourself.
@Anonymous I’m in an 8 person group, with lottery number 20/1619. We were hoping for an 8-person Ruggles but that seems pretty out of the question now. Is there any possibility of still getting Watt doubles if we regroup into twos? If not, what do we dooooooo??
@Anonymous First of all, you might consider sacrificing a virgin or two in honor of the housing gods’ decision to let juniors do regroup this year. Not all of us were so lucky in years past and had to drop straight to general selection (I’m looking at you, Wienies.) You might get lucky with Watt. Nussbaum doubles are definitely an option. Broadway singles (and definitely doubles) are within reach for you. Go to your appointment time with the intention of doubling up and see what’s available; if you don’t find anything you like then you can drop to general selection.
@Anonymous Yeah probably not. Unless they don’t get taken in suite selection, which is pretty much impossible, you won’t get Watt
@Oh yeahhh 6th to pick
@Anonymous Can anybody in a Ruggles suite tell me what that extra room is next to the kitchen in the 8 person suites on this floor plan?
The unmarked room in the upper right, next to the bathroom.
housingservices . columbia . edu /files/housingservices/floorplans/ruggles/ruggles_4.pdf
@Anonymous It doesn’t actually exist. It’s an error in the floor plans.
@Anonymous Ok. So it’s just a walled off room, or what?
@Anonymous Does anyone know what the 5 person suite in Ruggles looks like? The housing floor plan doesn’t show a 5 person suite, but cutoff history shows that there is one now…
@Anonymous There are no five person suites in Ruggles. Each floor (with the exception of the first floor) has two 8-person suites, one 6-person suite, and one 4-person suite.
@Anonymous http://housingservices.columbia.edu/content/cutoff-history
It says their is one here… They are doing construction on the residential programming suite, so changes are being made on the first floor. Ex, the 8-person suite no longer has a walk through double.
@CC'13 what are my odds in all all senior 4-person, with 28 other groups ahead of us? i’ve said goodbye to the EC townhouses, but ruggles…?
@Anonymous THE E TEAM!
@Anonymous By then, probably only Claremont 4-persons will be available and one of the rooms in there is 81-square-feet. You might want to go for general selection…
@CC'13 you’d suggest general, rather than regroup? we’re weighing our options, i have no idea!
@Anonymous What does it mean when there’s “General Selection!” next to the number listed. Are they ahead of me or not?
@I was wondering the same thing…I counted the groups in front of me and the number listed at the bottom only included suite selection, so I’m guessing general is not actually picking before my group (which makes sense since suite selection goes first anyway).
@Brian Yep! Suite Selection happens before general, so any groups flagged for general are picking after you (if you’re in Suite Selection) and thus not counted.
@Anonymous It’d be nice to be able to scroll down the list it generates on a smartphone.
@Anonymous life is hard
@Anonymous Click the box and then scroll, broski.
@confused wait i’m a rising sophomore in a group with 7 other rising sophomores. how are there only 41 groups ahead of mine. what does that mean? i can’t be the 42nd group of the whole school to pick a suite…
@Anonymous You’ll be the 42nd 7-person group to pick a suite, so basically all 7-person suites will be long gone by the time you come to suite selection. The best option you have as rising sophomores is sophomore pair-up during suite selection. However, one of you will have to drop to general…
@so as a rising sophomore who has 44 groups before his 8-person group, does this mean I am definitely going to be unable to get a suite?
@Anonymous yes. you are screwed.
@Welcome! Welcome to the Columbia Housing system!
@Anonymous Sophomore pair-up is your only option. McBain really ain’t so bad, kiddo.
@Anonymous Sorry to hear that. However, as an 8-person group, you must have known that the chances of having to split up would be very high.
@Anonymous wait just kidding there are 8 of you. So you can all pair-up during suite selection and not worry about general. (Make sure you do pair up though so you don’t get a random room mate in a Mcbain shaft)
@Anonymous ok that makes more sense. so we’re the 42nd 8-person group to pick, got it. and yeah we expected to do the pair-up thing, thanks!
@help! Do you have the info for how many suites there are for each group size?
@Anonymous as in available in housing
@Anonymous I believe they’re not 100% accurate on the housing website since some are taken out for special interest housing and such. I would in particular like to know the number of 6 person all-single suites available in EC…
@Anonymous rising senior, lotttery number 656. what are my best (realistic) options in general selection? please and thank you.
also, is it at all possible to choose from dorms normally reserved for suite selection that were for whatever reason not picked? does that only happen for summer transfer? how does that work?
@Anonymous Nussbaum, Broadway, River, Harmony, Schapiro, and Wien should all be available to you. And that’s the order I’d personally rank them, although opinions differ on the exact order among those first three. The holy grail of the Watt studio single is probably the only thing you can’t get at this point. Good luck, brother.
@WHY, GOD, WHY so many 6-person all-senior groups? all my devious plotting and interpersonal maneuvering, gone to waste… shitty senior year, here i come…
@I did this instead of going to class Really? I’m pretty sure there’s the normal amount of 6-person all senior groups. It’s pretty much on track for the trajectory they’ve been on for a while, with the exception of last year, which we all knew was a freak crazy anomaly anyway. If my math is right, all-singles suites should hang on until about 1700-1800, and the ones with one double should be around until like 2500 (but probably later as groups who refuse to suck it up and take the double drop to general\regroup), which is actually a little easier than it should be. Maybe my math is off, but it looks like 47 total suites – 12 spaces held out of lottery (actually likely to go down as groups move into the vacated brownstones) = 35 suites (plus the one in Hogan). And there’s a total of 44 30-pt groups. So about 8 groups won’t get 6-persons, which sounds about right to me.
If anything, 6-person all-seniors have disproportionately good numbers, with 27/38 above 1500.
@this is reassuring thanks for not going to class
@i guess i didn’t realize last year was an anomaly… but regardless, like you said, many of the groups got unusually good numbers. my group was not one of those groups…
@SOBBING This extinguished what little hope I still had…
@wait, this is seriously the best invention ever… or maybe it is that i just fawn over anything technological #humanitiesmajor
@#cs nope its pretty great.
17 – not bad at all
