A press release has just been issued announcing that Prezbo and the Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus will sign an agreement at 10:30 am tomorrow, “formalizing their intention to reinstate Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) programs at Columbia for the first time in 40 years.” The ceremony will take place onboard the navy ship USS Iwo Jima, which is currently docked at Pier 88 on the Hudson River (near the Intrepid) for the Navy’s annual Fleet Week.
According to the statement:
Under the agreement, the NROTC program will have an office on Columbia’s campus and active duty Navy and Marine Corps officers will meet with Columbia NROTC midshipmen during routinely scheduled office hours. Navy and Marine Corps-option midshipmen will participate in NROTC through a unit hosted at SUNY Maritime College in Throgs Neck, NY.

@Anonymous HELL NO ROTC!!! WE WANT DEMOCRACY!!!
@Townie Psh! The Navy! Coming into OUR town and stealing OUR women.
@Talking to Davy... who’s still in the navy…
Yay for Fleet Week!!
@ahahaha bwog please favorite this
@Anonymous Let’s face it, if Columbia was going to stop associating itself with all groups that discriminate in some way, it would have to start with Barnard…
@Anonymous good point…
@Barnard transgender policy The transgender argument against ROTC had the least impact at Columbia, of all the ROTC debates at top schools last semester, because of Barnard’s gender identity policies. Though Barnard students and faculty voted against ROTC, Barnard’s very nature and presence at Columbia ushered ROTC past the gender identity based arguments.
@Realist This is really upsetting to all the Transgender students who want to be Navy Seals and United States Army Rangers
@but.. …exciting for people who want to serve their country?
@What? Sorry, I was too busy not giving a shit because it is summer.
@$ aspect Now those who can’t afford the education can have the military pay for it, instead of Columbia. PrezBo is very happy.
@DAS RACIST IDUNGIVAFUH
@Michael Segal Secretary Mabus will also be appearing the same day at Yale. The Yale Daily News has an article but few details.
@Michael Segal Yale got its own on-campus Navy ROTC unit.
@Graduated bitches.... so i automatically don’t care.
@Anonymous yet you skill are reading bwog? lame-ass.
@... the whole damn thing is just a massive PR stunt.
@Angry Commenter BOO PREZBO! BOO MILLITARY! BOO OBAMA! MANHATTANVILLE! FREE THE COLUMBIA 5! BRING BACK JJ’S TO IT’S ORIGINAL FORM! WE SHALL NOT STAND FOR THIS….oh wait nvm Modern Family is on brb.
@Anonymous The fact that Bollinger has to go sign this agreement on a navy ship, on the navy’s terms shows how whipped Columbia was throughout this whole process. Its quite clear to any logical observer that the ROTC exploratory commission was founded, at the onset, with the intention of reinstating ROTC. The whole thing was a sham to create the illusion of balanced discussion when in reality, the administration and those leading the commission were blatantly biased.
@Anonymous your entire premise is wrong anyway. Since when was Columbia a democracy? You’re there to study, not to dictate university policy.
@Anonymous this is a major setback to the advancement of transgender people
@Anonymous This is an honest question: At what point can we stop treating individualism as automatically better than cultural normativism?
@Anonymous Double whatever
@Seriously? Who is agreeing with this crap?
@Anonymous Sounds intellectual so all the hippies are agreeing
