20 CommentsThe NSOP 2011 schedule has been released! Lots of the usual suspects here: a zillion John Jay dinners, a tour of Park Slope, etc. Here’s what the handbook has to say about the (now cancelled) Convocation 2011:
President Bollinger, Dean Moody-Adams, Dean Peña-Mora, Dean Shollenberger, Columbia College Alumni Association President Kyra Barry, administrators, faculty, and student leaders at this event that will welcome you and your family into the Columbia community.
Many things have been canceled uprooted, including everything scheduled for Sunday, the campus resource fair, convocation and the academic assembly. It’s unclear whether any of these are going to be rescheduled.
Update, 9:25pm: GS Orientation scheduled for Monday has now been canceled as well (email below jump). Student Affairs also released Inclement Weather Update 6 earlier this afternoon, noting that COÖP now returns tonight and urging students to adjust plans so they will move in after the storm has cleared. Hurricanes, man.

As many of you know, Hurricane Irene is projected to impact the greater New York area from now through Sunday, August 28.
For the safety of students and the Columbia community, we have rescheduled the School of General Studies and Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program New Student Orientation Day activities originally scheduled for Monday, August 29, and we have reorganized the programming from Orientation Day that is essential to your enrollment and transition to Columbia.
Please note that Extended Orientation, a series of events designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to Columbia and New York City, will go on as scheduled. Please refer to the GS and Postbac websites for a schedule of events.
Additionally, please note that the Office of the Dean of Students and the Postbaccalaureate Premedical Office, located in 403 Lewisohn Hall will be closed on Monday, August 29.

upperclassmen: what are the must-see neighborhoods?
@Anonymous I went on the Park Slope tour during NSOP and it was fun.
I think the best tours to go on are to places you might not consider ever exploring on your own. You’ll probably make it down to the Village and High Line many times during your freshman year, but you might not do much walking around Harlem or Washington Heights. I think the Harlem tour could be cool, as well as the Cloisters, and the New Museum. Also, that St. John the Divine vertical tour sounds awesome! I didn’t even know you could go up there.

@Anonymous Oh come on. I love Harlem! Then again I’ve spent the past 14 months living in Washington Heights so anything other than that looks pretty peachy to me.

@Anonymous Believe me, rent is not low in Harlem. Beautiful brownstones, lots of trees, riverfront parks…there’s a lot to love about Harlem if you give it a chance.
@Anonymous The vertical tour is really cool but not something you should do during NSOP! Get far away from campus while you have time to and people to show you around! I did the vertical tour during art hum, but even if your class doesn’t, St. John’s will always be two blocks away.
@CC'11 Vertical Tour and any outer borough visit to Queens or Brooklyn, as you most likely won’t do that with your friends.
