In a school-wide email announcement earlier this afternoon, Dean of Student Affairs Kevin Shollenberger announced that MIT Financial Aid Director Daniel Barkowitz will be Columbia’s new Dean of Financial Aid and Associate Dean of Student Affairs.
“A financial aid professional with over twenty years of experience in higher education – most recently as Director of Student Financial Aid and Employment for MIT,” Shollenberger wrote in the announcement, “he brings to Columbia a depth of experience and strategic planning skills in the areas of enrollment management and policy development.” Full email after the jump.

Dear Students,
Providing an affordable education to all students, regardless of their financial resources, has long been a priority at Columbia. From the time students apply to Columbia and continuing through graduation, we guide students through the complex and frequently misunderstood process of financing a college education. Financial Aid staff offer caring and confidential advice along with comprehensive, timely information about the various financing options available. In these times of economic uncertainty, this commitment to our students and their families becomes even more important.
With this in mind, I am delighted to announce the appointment of Daniel T. Barkowitz as Dean of Financial Aid/Associate Dean of Student Affairs, effective June 1, 2009. A financial aid professional with over twenty years of experience in higher education – most recently as Director of Student Financial Aid and Employment for MIT – he brings to Columbia a depth of experience and strategic planning skills in the areas of enrollment management and policy development. He is a nationally recognized leader in his field and has developed innovative ways of looking at need analysis. Under Dean Barkowitz’s leadership, the Office of Financial Aid and Educational Financing will continue to provide the kind of support Columbia students and their families need while at the same time developing new programs to enhance the services we provide. His knowledge, dedication and experience managing financial aid systems and processes, together with his understanding of financial aid policies, will serve our students well.
I hope you are as pleased as I am that Daniel Barkowitz will soon join the Columbia community.
Sincerely,
Kevin G. Shollenberger

@hrm I’m glad that “he brings to Columbia a depth of experience and strategic planning skills in the areas of enrollment management and policy development” but tell me, please, what are his feelings on accepting kickbacks from financial aid companies?
@Anonymous He has a long track record in student financial aid, with no kickbacks, no hint of anything unethical. Nothing exciting there.
@Anonymous I’m sure your quite something to look at. Pretty boy.
@scared he’s kind of scary looking in a weird way too — not sure how he will fit in… guess he will be kind of easy to spot in a crowd though
@wow nerd alert
@wow he looks idiotic
@Anonymous He may look idiotic, but you sound idiotic.
@Alum So basically we traded Chris Columbo to MIT for one of his new deputies.
We did better vis-a-vis Rice several years ago, when we sent them the Dean of SEAS (David Auston) to be their provost after taking their president, George Rupp. But then it turned out the deal included another dean to be named later; David Leebron of the law school left several years ago to become Rice’s president.
Maybe we can press MIT to throw a couple of admissions officers into the deal.
@lol apparently there are alums who follow University Administrator moves like sports trades?
@... i think marilee jones would fit in quite well with columbia’s “sharp on the outside retarded on the inside” student culture.
@Karen Jennifer Hi! My name is Karen. This may be an inconvenience but please understand that the LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, financial need; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. I am trying to find a resume person who can help us. I am a 36 year old self-supporting single mom and sole financial support of my two kids age 12 and 9. I need help to pay my gas, water and electric bill.I lost my job in August and still i am out of work. My smaller child is sick with asthma. And she will get sicker as it gets colder. I do not know what to do. Water bill was $55, Gas $70 and now my electricity bill is around $31, (we are billed 6 times a year) bill (water, gas and electricity) averages $156. I can’t understand how gas, electricity and water prices are going up so quickly and yet the official inflation rate doesn’t reflect it. I live in a small town without a lot of programs.
Please help us to be able to stay in this house, so we can continue having a normal life again.
