When star wide receiver Austin Knowlin scored in the 2nd quarter to put Columbia up 13-0 over Central Connecticut State, the football team looked well on its way to a second victory of the season. But Central Connecticut blocked and returned the ensuing PAT, and then scored on three of its next four possessions, to come back and beat the Lions 22-13. Senior running back Ray Rangel had 134 yards for Columbia, but could not compete with the Central Connecticut rushing attack, which pumped out almost 350 yards. Next week sees the football team’s first Ivy League game, at Princeton. Seniors eager to tailgate (with the promise of free beer!) will have to wait for Homecoming against Penn on October 17.
Despite the loss, the Light Blue can claim bragging rights over our Big Red friends to the north, as Columbia won two out of three encounters with Cornell this weekend. Only the field hockey’s 2-1 loss in double overtime prevented a clean sweep. The women’s soccer team began its Ivy title charge with a 1-0 win behind a goal from Ashlin Yahr, but it was the volleyball team that made history, with a straight sets victory over Cornell that was the team’s first Ivy win since 2006, and its first win over Cornell since 2001. Congrats!
