The Diana Black Box Theatre

Ash Tai was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY to West-Indian immigrant parents. In her one-woman show, “As I Go Through”, which debuted at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in May 2009, Ash Tai recalls and performs her reality of being raised by a Jamaican father and Trinidadian mother. Much of her “broughtupcy,” as she calls it, was based on displaying stability and happiness to her peers, friends and her community, so as not to “shame” the family name. In “As I Go Through”, Ash Tai liberates her voice and truth, and shows how gender, race, religion, and sexuality were constructed in her urban Caribbean household. In performing her narrative, Ash Tai allows her audience to bear witness to her healing process, inspiring others to begin their own.
