A record five-time SW nominee, this gal has reportedly “climbed unclimbable peaks.”
Name, school: Simone Foxman, CC
Claim to fame: Well, you might remember me because I’m that person you ran into on College Walk the other day because I was engrossed in an article I was reading on my phone. Can I say mind control device? I may also have been talking to myself. Awkward… But on my resume it says: co-Musical Director of the Columbia Metrotones, ex-Speccie, SDT sister, and a chronic intern.
Where are you going? Downtown to work for Business Insider – a business blog – on their front page and in their video department. One day I want to be the next Christiane Amanpour, but I figure baby steps, right?
Three things you learned at Columbia:
1. People do not care about your mistakes nearly as much as you think they do. Your professor did not spend all last night mentally critiquing your paper so he could rip your argument to shreds today in class, and he probably won’t give a shit if you need to ask for an extension. Seriously, chill out.
2. My mother told me when I was little that wisdom is acknowledging how little you do know. I doubt I’m truly wise (even though Bwog seems to think so!), but Columbia definitely showed me how much there is to learn.
3. You make your social life. It’s all about seeing the good in people and being tolerant of the fact that not everyone shares your opinions. You’ll never have fun if you don’t make it for yourself.
“Back in my day…” Hunger strikers camped out on Butler lawn! I looked like Hermione Granger! People survived without cell phones! The 80s happened!
Justify your existence in 30 words or fewer: WSJ published an editorial I wrote about lowering the drinking age. I speak 3 languages (kinda)! I arranged “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” for female a cappella. Winning!
Is the War on Fun over? Who won? Any war stories? The success or failure of the Columbia administration is completely dependent upon the students! When I went to sign up for an Economics seminar this semester, people had been camped out on the 10th floor of IAB sitting in line since 5-5:30 AM. Seriously, kids. There is no difference between being the first person to get into a seminar or the last. I felt ashamed that I arrived so early, and I got there at 7:45.
We are our own war on fun. Public safety will be powerless if we stand together in pursuit of a good time. Long live 40s on 40. Party on.
Would you rather give up oral sex or cheese? Cheese is great, but it just doesn’t measure up. ;)
Advice for the class of 2015:
1. Columbia is an incredible place to interact with some of the world’s most intelligent people. Don’t spend so much time in the library that you don’t take advantage of the human resources all around you.
2. We’re at Columbia. We’re all nerds. Be proud!
3. Always use CULPA, but also sign up for way more classes than you’re actually going to take. CULPA works most of the time, but it has been known to err.
4. Don’t wait until senior year to take Art and Music Hum. You just won’t have the energy left, and you don’t have the time to vet teachers.
5. Sing the Columbia fight song. A lot.
6. Dating is not as hard as you think it is. Just be yourself and be courageous. It may sound cliché, but loving and losing is always better than never having loved at all.
Any regrets?
Things I didn’t get to do at Columbia? Definitely. Regrets? Never!

I love the advice about how you make your own social life. I wish people would stop whining about how boring our school is, and how there are no dateable men, and be proactive!
@And how! One simply need join a sorority and the social life appears like magic!
@CC '11 But seriously, get to the econ department early if you want to get in your first choice seminar. I got there at 7 and was shut out of my top choice.
