Columbia Athletics is back in action and so is Bwog Sports! Every Sunday, Bwog rounds up the biggest Columbia sporting news of the week for those who couldn’t catch every game at Baker and Levein, or for those who couldn’t point to Baker or Levein on a map but like to stay in the loop anyways. This week, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, and Field Hockey all opened their home seasons with wins, and by the same margin, too. Read on for more details on the games, as well as team records and upcoming contests. And if this week’s games got you itching to get out on the field yourself, there’s info below on three intramural sports that are currently open for registration: flag football, outdoor soccer, and volleyball.

Nick Scott CC'13 tallied a goal and an assist in Wednesday's win

Men’s Soccer (1-2):

Results:

Manhattan 2-0 (W)

Overview: After dropping their opening two games, the Lions bounced back on Wednesday, beating Manhattan with two second half goals. The Lions first goal of the season came in the opening minutes of the second half when Columbia was awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the box. Senior Nick Scott slotted the ball past the Manhattan keeper to put the Lions on top 1-0. Just minutes later, Scott found the head of fellow senior Quentin Grigsby off a corner kick, who buried the ball in the upper right corner of the net. The Lions held on to the lead for the remainder of the game, tallying their first win and shut out of the season.

Up Next: The Men’s Soccer team takes on Monmouth today at 1 pm after the game was postponed yesterday.

Women’s Soccer (1-2):

Results:

Sacred Heart 2-0 (W)

Overview: Like the Men’s team, the Women’s Soccer squad had a disappointing start to the season, losing their opening two games to Georgetown and George Washington on the road. However, the Lions came out strong in their home opener on Friday, tallying a shot within the first minute and scoring just over 12 minutes into the game. The goal came off of a corner from junior Natalie Melo, which eventually found junior Beverley Leon after a scuffle in the box. Leon was able to find the back of the net and give the Lions an early 1-0 lead. The Lions extended the lead just minutes later, when junior Colleen Rizzo struck a well-placed ball towards the near post, past the Sacred Heart keeper. The Lions continued to dominate through a scoreless second half, winning their first game of the season 2-0.

Up Next: The Lions face St. John’s today at Columbia Soccer Stadium at 7pm.

Field Hockey (2-2):

Results:

Bucknell 2-0 (W)
La Salle 8-3 (W)

Overview: After a heartbreaking overtime loss to Richmond and another narrow defeat at VCU, the Lions came out flying in their home opener against Bucknell on Saturday. Columbia drew a penalty corner in the first minute of the game, and capitalized on the opportunity. Senior Paige Simmons found freshman Anni Scipioni, who tallied her first collegiate goal to give the Lions an early 1-0 lead. Despite the advantage, Bucknell continued to put pressure on Columbia, firing shots on goalkeeper Christie O’Hara, who had 6 saves on the day. In the second half, the Lions added to their lead when senior Gabby Kozlowski dribbled at full speed toward the cage and slotted the ball passed the Bison keeper. Columbia went on to win their first game of the season, 2-0.

Bwog just got word that the Lions won their second straight against La Salle today, 8-3!

Up Next: The Lions take on Hofstra at home on Wednesday at 4 pm.

Volleyball (2-4):

Results:

University of Delaware Invitational
Delaware 3-1 (W)
Xavier 0-3 (L)
Texas A&M 0-3 (L)

Overview: The Lions opened the season over Labor Day weekend with a 2-1 record at the University of Central Florida Classic and fared the same this weekend at the University of Delaware Invitational. In their first game against host Delaware, the Lions were behind for much of the first set, but came back to narrowly claim the first 25-23. The second set remained close until the Lions mounted a 7-1 run to gain a strong lead, and took the set, 25-18. Delaware got the better of Columbia in the third, but the Lions closed out the game in the fourth set, winning 25-22. Despite the strong start to the weekend, the Lions did not see the same success against their next two opponents. Columbia fell in straight sets to both Xavier and Texas A&M. Sophomore Molly Winger was named to the Delaware Invitational All-Tournament team after tallying 42 digs over the weekend.

Up Next: Columbia opens their home season next weekend as they host the Columbia Invitational at Levien Gymnasium. The five-game tournament will include Colgate, Hofstra, and Rhode Island. The Lions will face Colgate at 7 pm on Friday, Rhode Island at 11 am on Saturday, and Hofstra later at 7 pm.
