This week’s ESC meeting was supposedly dull and marked by low temperatures; however, there are some exciting events to look forward to. Political pressperson Aria Sharma reports:

Come to TEDx Columbia Engineering on Friday, October 19th. There will be two sessions (from 1:30-3:00pm and 4:00-5:30pm), both of which are entirely free! Awesome speakers include: Michael Massimino—a real live, Columbia-grad astronaut, Jonathan Rosenberg—Chief Technology Officer for Skype, and Professor Emanuel Derman—our very own Columbia professor and author of a new book, Models.Behaving.Badly: Why Confusing Illusion With Reality Can Lead to Disaster, on Wall Street and in Life, discussing the financial crisis. As mentioned before, it’s free!

The freshmen class council was in the house tonight, sharing their fun fats as they embarked upon their new journey of ESC goodness.

Also present at tonight’s meeting was the Center for Student Advising, marking the first time this reporter has ever heard of such a center. They were mainly here to discuss the assessments they’ve put out for the past eighteen months. A whopping forty percent of the student body participated in the most recent survey, of which the results were “great” (the number of times “great” was said was six times in three minutes). The representatives from CSA also introduced resources to help SEAS students find their major. There is a SEAS discovery event on Friday, open houses going on, a new booklet full of pretty pictures, and a more resources found on the CSA website. So SEAS students, go forth and find your major.

Karishma Habbu, President of CCSC, came to speak about an underused space initiative. Places in mind are Lerner SGO, the Schapiro dance rooms, and the EC lounge on the 2nd floor. The idea is to take a walk-through of each space this Friday, document the amenities of the space, and compile a list of places available for student groups to meet. There will be a town hall for student groups to discuss what should be done with these spaces once and for all.

There will be a student-only town hall on Wednesday, 4-5pm, in Davis Auditorium about Dean search.
