More Like Close-o-mat, Amirite?

Cardomat is closing, and that means two things. One, the end of Cardomat’s interminable signs; and two, the availability of primo Broadway retail space. We called, but nobody picked up. Send word if you ascertain what’s going to replace it before we do.

  • All I want says:

    @All I want is another falafel place

    1. Anonymous says:

      @Anonymous Amirs is absolutely dreadful. We need a mamouns or at the very least, a swank new night club. Especially since it is far easier to get laid when dance is thrown in the mix than at some bleak and grad-student laden divebar (I’m looking at you 1020).

  • Please please PLEASE let it be a [non-pricey] bar says:

    @Please please PLEASE let it be a [non-pricey] bar WE WANT ALCOHOL.

        @hmm... Upboat? Name of the new dive? I call it.

  • Anonymous says:

    @Anonymous Hopefully a great clothing store or a chicken and ribs place.

  • Ever since freshman year says:

    @Ever since freshman year I have been waiting for this post. Did anyone actually shop there?

  • naively hopeful says:

    @naively hopeful I want a real used book store like every other self-respecting college has. Please let it not become a bank/overpriced chain store,

    1. CC '13 says:

      @CC '13 and run every street book vendor out of business? have you no soul?

    2. Anonymous says:

      @Anonymous let’s just get a third book culture

  • CC '13 says:

    @CC '13 Like I didn’t see that one coming…

    1. Anonymous says:

  • WHERE THE FUCK says:

    @WHERE THE FUCK IS THE YEAR IN REVIEW?

    Sloppy end to a sloppy semester.

  • frankly says:

    @frankly how was that place able to survive so long?

  • Anonymous says:

    @Anonymous BANK OF AMERICA ATM PLZZZZZZZ

    1. @Broadway between 115th and 107th already has a totally excessive number of ATM locations: two Citibanks (Lerner and 111th), THREE Chase banks (113th, 112th, 109th), a TD Bank on 109th, Banco Popular on 111th, and a Bank of America on 107th. From an urbanism perspective, bank ATM locations are dead space. They waste good storefront locations which could be used to enliven the sidewalk with an interesting cafe, bookshop, or another small independent business, increasing the vitality of the neighborhood. These small businesses are increasingly being priced out by rising rents, and instead we get empty storefronts with ATMs inside. I think the 6 block walk to Bank of America is a small price to pay for a more livable neighborhood.

      1. damn son says:

        @damn son you right

  • Anonymous says:

    @Anonymous HEY. HEY. HEY. Let’s see how much it is and all buy into a bar.

  • Truth says:

    @Truth Cardomat was amazing for picking out nice cards for people. Now I will probably have to go to some soulless corporate, capitalist entity to show my affection for others…oh wait…

    1. Anonymous says:

      @Anonymous Did you ever try the book store. They have cards.

  • anonymouse says:

    @anonymouse Can we name it “Puzzles”?

    1. Anonymous says:

      @Anonymous That’s the Puzzle!

      I’m dead serious though. What would be a better drinking establishment for Columbia students than one owned by a collective of Columbia students?

  • We have enough bars says:

    @We have enough bars Fuck alcohol, I want comfort food. Uni Cafe is terrible. Throw a Papaya King or a Papaya Dog in Cardomat’s spot. It won’t run them out of business but it will attract all the undergrads who are okay with walking a few more blocks from campus.

    1. Institutional memory says:

      @Institutional memory Does anyone remember Mike’s Papaya?

  • We need a says:

    @We need a KOSHER PIZZA STORE!

    1. Anonymous says:

      @Anonymous I say this as a jew by birth, but please, shut the fuk up with your superstitious bullshit. God aint gonna sick your dik or lick your pusy just cause you eat pizza that some old sweaty fat rabbi dipped his holy ballsak into. Nor will saying “abra cadabra” magically bless and sanction food for consumption. So shut the fuk up, you low IQ nit-wit who can’t think for themselves. Stop believing in motherfucking fairy tales and wake the fuk up instead of letting a book about some retards turning rocks into water (moses) and people into sand (sodom gomorrah) dictate your life decisions.

      Fuk all you religious dickholes.

      1. Kosher says:

        @Kosher @We need a: @Anonymous: @Anonymous:

        Food being kosher has nothing to do with being blessed by a Rabbi or superstitious magical practices. It relates to centuries old Biblical and Rabbinic customs which prohibit or allow the eating of certain types of foods, and it focuses on the ingredients in the foods.

        Please be sensitive to specific cultural and religious norms that are different than yours. Give respect and you will receive it in turn.

  • Ron says:

    @Ron I wish the new Sichuan restaurant Legend could relocate there. It’s the best restaurant to arrive in this neighborhood in many years and I worry about the drawbacks of their 109th street location.

    1. Anonymous says:

      @Anonymous There is a new movie theater opening soon on 100th street.

  • Anonymous says:

    @Anonymous I know for a fact that The Lusty Lady, a San Francisco-based, feminist-run, sex-positive peep show and adult toy store is taking its place there.

    This is a good thing.
