About A Bwog

Bwog’s just changed a big part of itself — don’t worry, we don’t have another fabulous new redesign in the works. We’ve created a new About Us page that is actually about us!

If you mosey over to the top of our site, you’ll see a little link on the upper right-hand corner that says “About Us.” There, you will find a newly updated description of who we are and what we want. Or, just move your eyeballs a little lower down the page to read our new About Us here. We’ve included our old About Us after the jump for never-ending glory posterity.

Thoughts? Questions? Concerns? Comment!

About Us:

Bwog was launched in January 2006 as the online incarnation of The Blue and White magazine. Originally intended to post stories that warranted immediate attention–such as free food alerts and breaking news–Bwog has developed into Columbia’s preeminent campus blog. While our focus remains set on the university, we are a financially and administratively independent organization, published by Blue and White Publishing Inc.

Bwog is completely student-run and publishes multiple posts a day during the academic year. Our goal is to alert students to information of interest and offer a critical perspective on life at Columbia. This includes news from the administration, campus gossip, and events–in addition to, still, free food. We post what you should have heard about as a member of the Columbia community, packaged with bad puns and coarse jokes.

Bwog’s rise to legitimacy came with the Minuteman protests in the fall of 2006. Other highlights in Bwog history include September 2007 when Ahmedinejad came to campus–thus creating our beloved Hawkmadinejad–comprehensive coverage of Operation Ivy League in winter 2010, breaking the news on Dean Moody-Adams’ resignation in summer 2011, and the spring 2012 announcement of President Barack Obama as Barnard’s commencement speaker.

As seen in the case of Obamanard, the Bwog comment section is vibrant and active. This space is intended for readers to discuss relevant topics constructively and respectfully. Bwog leaves it largely self-moderated, but reserves the right to step in, as per our comment policy.

If you are interested in joining Bwog or have juicy news and gossip, email us at, or come to our open weekly meetings every Sunday at 7 pm in the Lerner SGO. For inquiries concerning advertisements, contact

About OldBwog:

The Bwog is the 24/7 blog incarnation of The Blue and White, Columbia University’s monthly undergraduate magazine. It updates multiple times daily, bringing readers Columbia news, gossip, arts, sports, and free food. Bwog is the place to find out what’s big on and around campus. And be sure to submit your own news/gossip-worthy items to!

The Columbia University community turns to The Blue and White for news, culture, and humor. The Blue and White features diverse content including incisive, cheeky commentaries on Columbia and New York happenings, the best of students’ poetry and short fiction, and art criticism.

Founded in 1891, in keeping with other Columbia institutions, the magazine underwent a period of dormancy before being revived some years later. To be exact, the B&W went under in 1893 and was only refounded in 1998. Despite the passing of years, our purpose remains largely unchanged since expressed by Editor Sidney Treat, C’1893: “to give bright and newsy items, which are of interest to all of us, combined with truthful comments on the same, in order to show clearly the exact tone of the College.”

The Blue and White is widely read in the Columbia community, a market that includes nearly 8,000 undergraduates and over 22,000 total full-time students; over 7,000 faculty; and over 11,000 administrators and staff. With a paper circulation of 2500 issues per month, our distribution ranges from dorm rooms and campus buildings to local businesses and alumni mailboxes.

We publish on the first Thursday of each month throughout the academic year, with the exception of January.

  • Bwog is the least cool says:

@Bwog is the least cool I love the “rise to legitimacy line”–good old back patting and delusion. Bwog breaks stories after Spec, is often times misinformed, and is essentially just a forum for losers to spew hatred. Bwog, you epitomize what needs to change on this campus for students to be happier.

    1. LR says:

@LR You’re kinda doing that yourself. If you’re concerned about losers spewing hatred and the happiness of students on campus, maybe insulting bwog and the people behind it isn’t the most productive thing to do. I’m all for constructive criticism and I agree bwog has issues, but try some respect. That’s what people here actually need to work on.

  • Query says:

@Query New Spec, only slightly better than new Bwog?

  • Anonymous says:

@Anonymous You SHOULD have a redesign going. The new design came out, drowned everyone in hated whitespace, and that was it. It seems obvious that someone on the editorial board doesn’t want to come to terms with the fact that the old site should have been left alone.
