You know those two senior societies, the Sachems and the Nacoms, that “take the secrecy element very seriously“? Well IvyGate published a list of what it believes to be 14 of the 15 members of the 2014 Sachems. Members include the presidents of CCSC and ESC, the former managing editor of the Blue and White Anna Bahr, the former publisher of Spec, and other prominent members of the community. See the full list for yourself.

@Sachem For initiation we all place our fingers up each others butt holes. That’s hope dedicated we are to Columbia. Respect Us.
@Seriously How can you write “In the know” as your commenting alias and not feel a little bit embarrassed about your prep-school-cliquey affectations?
@Anonymous Not pictured: Peter Sterne and Conor Skelding weeping silently.
@number 15 is Jia Ahmed
@Team Renee My greatest love. what a superstar, so happy for ya babe! :)
@Anonymous >be exposed
>still get less comments than SPECSUCKS UNMASKED
@Curious BC 11 Can someone please post members from previous years?
I don’t care much about what they do but i think people are interested who they are
@George Bush Is this the skull and bones?
@A really good bwog piece would be finding out exactly waht these guys do.
*THAT* i’d love to read
@Bwog, you forgot something Uh, Bacchanal?
@Anonymous Can all the nacoms and sachems take a chill pill and stop commenting on this?
People dont actually care about YOU. They care about the flagrant elitism it takes to secretly form a group that is supposed to help the campus, but for the most part does nothing except congratulate the members and give them access to a network of wealthy and powerful people. This has nothing to do with service. Meanwhile you bicker in secrecy all year until you all come to the realization that you just wasted two semesters trying to find common ground with people you share just one thing with: a talent for bureaucracy and self-importance.
You should be welcoming the attention if you cared about serving the community. Now we can actually ask if you’ve done something together in 1.5 semesters.
@Anonymous (mic drop)
@Seriously You go to an expensive Ivy League institution whose name on your resume, like it or not, will help you get a job. You have a network of powerful people at your disposal, if you actually took the time to network properly instead of complaining about how other people suddenly have all of these connections. Your dorm probably could have housed a bunch of families. We’re all in this elitist hell hole together- if you’re going to complain about a group of 15 people being elitist, complain about every single group that doesn’t allow everybody on campus to be in it that affords connections with its alumni (all of them).
@omg hey, do u no how to network?
do u no network? plz let me network
plz help, I want to be network
lmk how to network
hey thx BRO
@you "Greatest Hits 2006 " little listmaker. I bet that if I took the names of 15 random people, put them down on a list, called the list “People Whose Pets Will Be Bludgeoned To Death With a Rusty Shovel”, and published it on Bwog,
you’d still have folks who’d comment with things like
“HA. WOW. OK. WOW. PRETTY IRONIC FUCKING LIST. I DON’T CARE. AT ALL. I MEAN WHAT HAVE THEY DONE FOR COLUMBIA? I DON’T FUCKING CARE ABOUT THEIR PETS. I HAVE A LIFE. FUCKING TERRY MARTINEZ IS BEHIND THIS 100%. OUR BACCHANAL HEADLINER SUCKS.”
Dear Anna, Lauren, Sidd, Nelson, Daphne, Gray, Marvellous, Reid, Renee, Vivian, Griffin, Wangari, Jasmin and Alex, congrats on making it to Sachems. I know half of you and you’re all, like, perfectly fine people. Keep doing your thing and make Columbia proud, as you would have even without this honor.
@warning warning smarm alert
@yep I am so glad someone else understands this. Still, it’s worth remembering that there’s usually one good senator who doesn’t have his or her nose in PrezBo’s pubes and a disdain for the student body that elected them. Eg. Kenny Durell and Jared Odessky.
@Aww, Kenny! I so would have boned him.
@Anonymous lol university senators are sort of useless. they wouldn’t get anything done unless people were working behind the scene to help them get their stuff accomplished, only for them to get credit for it.
plus, richard sun and alex frouman were senators…….. nuff said
@lol secret societies are only cool at uva
@come on now et tu, bwogus?
@Junius Brutus Columbianus Amateurs. Even the existence of a true secret society remains unknown.
@Non-secret-society-related alum Bwog logic: “Oh hey look 15 people are working selflessly, without asking for name recognition, for the betterment of Columbia’s community! LET’S BE SNARKY ABOUT IT AND EXPOSE THEM!” Great work, journalists. I don’t know if much has changed at Columbia since I left, but it sure seems like Bwog is still nothing but irresponsible and bitter. Whether or not this list is real, these kids should be proud to be joining a long line of hardworking people who have incurred Bwog’s wrath for their good work. Congrats! I was friends with some Nacoms and Sachems during my time at the College and their only uniting traits were humility and a genuine care for Columbia’s student body. Not sure if the same can be said for anyone on Bwog’s staff.
Also, sorry Svokos but your “I didn’t get tapped and I’m going to spend my entire senior year bitterly whining about it” is showing.
@Anonymous 1. where was the snark? this was a straight list. and snark would have been justified if well done.
2. exposing power structures is good journalism.
3. bitching about how something ISNT NEWSWORTHY suggests the opposite…
@Anonymous What do they do? Seriously, what the fuck do Nacoms and Sachems do that make Columbia a better place?
A whole bunch of granfaloons, I tell ya.
@In the know A lot more than you realize. The reason they’re secret is because the point is to do action without receiving credit.
@Lol So what? So do tons of other people on this campus, and they do so without being tapped into a secret society that in its fundamental premise is elitist and self-congratulatory
@Anonymous So if they try to take action without receiving credit, why is it that these people are on… student council, Spec, Bwog, and in general every popular and widely publicized activity on campus?
@Anonymous This comment is a weak straw man. Stop trying to make an argument where you don’t have one. Even against a shitty publication like Bwog.
Don’t pretend Nacoms and Sachems serve selflessly. They will forever benefit from a network of people who are extremely wealthy and well-connected. Last year’s secret societies did little for the community except bicker in secrecy, but because of stupid rules and self-important illusions with how cool a secret society sounds, nobody in the general student body can hold these powerful groups of people accountable for the nothing they accomplish. Stop patting yourselves on the back. You can’t keep skating by on CAVA. Especially if you did nothing to establish it.
@Alumnus Really, Svokos? I sincerely hope you don’t consider yourself some sort of clever investigative journalist because all you did in this scenario was “reveal” a list of students that do good on campus and try to do so anonymously. They’re not insular elitists, it’s not even a secret society.
I can’t wait for your next big investigating piece in Highlights Magazine where you reveal to children that the Eastern Bunny isn’t real.
@Alumnus Whoops, Easter Bunny*
@Aherm Svokos is a non-factor. Sheeiiiiiiiiiit. Always trying to be the Gossip Girl. #getyalife
@lol good works We’ve all seen The Skulls. We know what you’re really doing, Student Leaders!
@help can someone please explain what these societies are, how members are picked and why I should care? thnx
@person Sachems have direct lineage, which means each member gets to pick their successor. Nacoms have to confirm tapping collectively, which means a more contentious process, but more often than not leads to the tapping of some truly cool, service slash social justice-oriented individuals. (nacoms is hella diverse!) There are some very decent people there, which explains the absence of Bwog masthead occupiers.
@Most interesting thing I learned from this... I get mass emails from Vivian Coyne and I always thought she was an administrator ’cause I never read her emails…. Now looking through my trash I see she’s a “CUSP graduate assistant,” whatever that means
@source? What is the source on all of this? Do we know any of this to even be real? Better question, do we care?
Also, I’d like to know what this group even does more than I give a shit about who is in it.
@On Break And I just realized that I hate Columbia
@Anonymous Join the club.
@Anonymous No, join the ~secret society~
@Anonymous Jealous much.
@Anonymous How much are the yearly dues? $12,000?
@Anonymous anna bahr is hot
@FWIW For what it’s worth, the Sachems gave up being a “secret” society in the 60s. Members are free to share their identity, particularly when they’re drunk, and its no big deal. The Nacoms remain a “secret” society, and SERIOUS penalties remain for sharing one’s identity as a Nacom.
@That just isn't True.

@15th member I is Akshay Shah… You can call me the last Sachem. You know there needs to be a senator.
@Seriously Yeah I’m kind of amazed Akshay Shah is not on this list.
@Anonymous They are Columbia’s Skull and Bones. It is rumored Obama was a member.
@lol No its not
@leak? how did this get out
@Anonymous Who knows the 15th?
@15th Sachem Me.
@Anonymous Bwog shouldn’t you be on break?
@Seriously Knowing a few of these people, all I can say is that it doesn’t seem like getting elected a Sachem means all that much after all. Oh well. Hopefully it doesn’t make them insufferable.
@Gray Henry, Gray Henry! He got real big on burgers and fries
