you, next weekend

you, next weekend

It’s pre-Bacchanal weekend. Make up for all the brain cells you’re set to lose next weekend by doing something actually interesting. Arts editor Madysen Luebke brings you no fewer than nine exciting events happenin’ around town.

All Weekend:

  • Colab’s Spring Showcase is happening this weekend in the Glicker-Milstein theatre!  Come see some of the most innovative dance pieces on campus for FREE!  Last semester, there was ariel dance, so who knows what this semester could bring?  Check it out Thursday, Friday or Saturday at 7:30 pm.
  • Latenite is back with even more antics!  Seeing too many shows this weekend?  No problem, because these performances will take place after the final bows of anything else you could be seeing.  Performances will be Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 11 pm with an additional show Friday at 8 pm, all in the Lerner Black Box.  Tickets are free, so don’t miss is!
  • Missed the last V-Day?  Well, you’re in luck because CUMC is hosting a performance of The Vagina Monologues this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at the Alumni Auditorium (at the Med Center).  Tickets are $10, and all proceeds will go to the charity Safe Horizons
  • Greek literature may be so first semester, but The Barnard-Columbia Ancient Drama Group is keeping the spirit strong with their production of The Libation Bearers.  So stop on by the Minor Latham Playhouse Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8 pm and Saturday at 2 pm to check it out.  Tickets are $5 with CUID.

Thursday:

  • New campus group, LyricLion, is having an off campus performance Thursday at 11:30 pm at 54 Below (254 W 54th St.).  The group consists of seven Columbian musicians and strives to support student composers on campus, including arranging compositions by singer-songwriters for their chamber group.  Cover charge is $10 with a two drink minimum, but hey, you were going to celebrate Thursday night anyways, so why get off campus and support fellow Columbians at the same time?
  • Head down to the dreaded 501 Schermerhorn Thursday at 8:15 pm for a free screening of The Double Life of Veronique directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski.  The event will be preceded by a book signing of Annette Insdorf’s “Double Lives, Second Chances: The Cinema of Krzysztof Kieslowski.”

Friday:

  • Get ready for Tamasha Le Cirque this Friday night, and celebrate all things about South Asian culture!  There will be performances by numerous student groups including CU Bhangra, CU Raas, Taal, Dhoom, Raw Elementz, String Theory, and many more!  Tickets are $5 CUID advanced, so pick them up early at TIC and be at Roone Friday at 8 pm!

Saturday:

  • Like to laugh?  Well then, unless you’re a heartless fool you should be sure to hit up Improvapalooza!  Featuring multiple different improv groups, you’ll be sure to find at least something funny!  Catch it at 1:30pm in the Glicker-Milstein Theatre for free!
  • Not just your average study music, the Columbia University Orchestra brings you iconic selections from Debussy, Bach, and Beethoven this Saturday at 8 pm in Roone.  Tickets are free, and let’s be real…we could all use a study break.
